Abstract: | Some chemically defined substances (phospholipids, unsaturated fatty acids) can disrupt cellular anabiosis and induce synthetic reactions under anaerobic conditions. This unusual anoxysynthetic (energy producing) effect is identical with that of extracts of cancer tissues, animal organs and yeasts. The result obtained in these experiments helps clarify more thoroughly the biomechanics of anoxyenic energy production that is independent of DPN (co-dehydrogenase I). It could be demonstrated by direct anabiotic tests that DPN is not a cofactor which induces energy-producing reactions under cytostatic conditions, although anabiotic cells are strongly enzymatic. One may derive from this that-1. the anaerobic dissimilation is endergonically insufficient and,-2. the unique anoxygenic energy potency is independent from and has nothing to do with alcoholic fermentation and glycolysis. In regards to the energy metabolim of tumors these results are all the more interesting. Our primary experiments have indicated on the basis of comparative tissue culture, that O(2) free decoctions and ether extracts of cancer tissues have a reactivating effect. This effect was seen not only with anabiotic test organisms (yeasts) but also similarly with cultured cancer cells under completely anaerobic conditions. |
