Abstract:Major depression is one of the most pressing public health issues due to its high lifetime prevalence of 15 %. Because major depression often starts in early adulthood and often takes a chronic and recurrent course, it dramatically impairs social functioning in many patients. Cognitive dysfunction is one of the major determinants of social functioning. In many depressed patients, cognitive dysfunction is not only present during the depressive episode but remains a residual symptom after remission. Attention, memory, and executive function are the cognitive domains that are most pronounced affected. Cognitive dysfunction is not only a predictor of poor treatment response but also of early relapse. So far, only few studies have specifically addressed the effects of existing antidepressants on cognitive dysfunction in depressed patients. Therefore, such studies need to be conducted and every effort should be undertaken to develop pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options that help to improve cognitive dysfunction during and after a depressive episode to reduce the patients’ burden of illness.
