Abstract:	In locally advanced malignant tumors preoperative radiochemotherapy is the current standard therapy for the most entities. Hyperthermia can be applied in combination with this therapeutic regimen to further increase the therapeutic effect. In this review we present the different approaches of hyperthermic therapy that are used in surgical oncology. We focus on the most commonly used forms of hyperthermia according to the gastrointestinal tract. So far, hyperthermia combined with radiochemotherapy led to encouraging results. Randomized trials are warranted to evaluate the real benefit of hyperthermia as compared to radiochemotherapy without hyperthermia.
