Abstract:It is well known that the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) plays a key role in regulating blood pressure and hydroelectrolyte balance. In addition to angiotensin (Ang) II, Ang-(1-7) has emerged as an important component of this system. Here we review evidence regarding the presence and actions of ACE2/Ang-(1-7)/Mas receptor pathway within the central nervous system, where the RAS possesses a crucial role in controlling cardiovascular, metabolic and stress-coping behavior functions. The involvement of this non-canonical RAS pathway in the brain mechanisms related to hypertension will also be discussed.
