Abstract:	The overall 5-year survival rate of esophageal cancer even after resection with clear margins (RO resection) ranges only between 10% and 20%, demonstrating the dismal prognosis of this disease. Controlled randomized trials suggested that combined modality therapy may improve outcome of those patients with operable disease and without distant metastases particularly following the approach of preoperative radiation plus chemotherapy [16]. In comparison, there are no convincing data from prospectively randomized trials documenting an advantage of postoperative adjuvant chemo- or radiotherapy [5].
