Astrocyte: Neurotransmitter and hormone receptors

Item Type:Book Section
Title:Astrocyte: Neurotransmitter and hormone receptors
Creators Name:Steinhaeuser, C. and Kettenmann, H.
Abstract:Astrocytes express essentially receptors for all neurotransmitters and neurohormones which mediate neuronal signaling. These include receptors for the major excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters, glutamate and {gamma}-aminobutyric acid, respectively. Among glutamate receptors, astrocytes can express N-methyl-d-aspartate, {alpha}-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionic acid (AMPA), and metabotropic glutamate receptors. A variety of purinergic receptors are also prominently expressed. Astrocyte receptors were first identified in cultured astrocytes, but subsequently their functional expression was verified in brain tissue. The latter studies showed that the expression pattern can vary depending on the brain region or a pathologic context.
