Title:Laparoscopic ultrasonography for staging of gastrointestinal cancer
Creators Name:Huenerbein, M., Rau, B., Hohenberger, P. and Schlag, P.M.
Abstract:Despite the availability of various modern imaging techniques, preoperative staging of gastrointestinal tumors is frequently incorrect. Small intra-abdominal metastases, i.e., liver and lymph node metastases, and peritoneal deposits may not be visualized because of the limited resolution of transcutaneous ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT). Furthermore, accurate assessment of re- sectability remains a challenge. In recent years, laparoscopy has increasingly been used for staging of gastrointestinal tumors. Recently, the promising results of this technique have been reviewed by several authors [1–3].
